Soon to be a major motion picture...the horror western that was considered too epic for the big screen!.

A brutal and unflinching tale that takes many of its cues from both cinema and pulp horror, Wraiths of the Broken Land is like no Western you’ve ever seen or read. Desperate to reclaim two kidnapped sisters who were forced into prostitution, the Plugfords storm across the badlands and blast their way through Hell. This gritty, character-driven piece will have you by the throat from the very first page and drag you across sharp rocks for its unrelenting duration. Prepare yourself for a savage Western experience that combines elements of Horror, Noir and Asian ultra-violence.

You’ve been warned.

Zahler’s debut western novel, A Congregation of Jackals, was nominated for both The Peacemaker award by the Western Fictioneers and The Spur award by the Western Writers of America.

Wraiths of the Broken Land promises to be the benchmark for gritty westerns. Zahler has been spearheading the genre's recent surge of popularity, but others quickly joined in to push mainstream penetration for dark westerns Bone Tomahawk written and directed by S. Craig Zahler was quickly followed by The Revenant and Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, after which Westworld and The Dark Tower entered production, culminating with 20th Century Fox deciding to make Wraiths... their followup to The Martian.

The Martian was Fox's top grossing film in 2015, and brutal westerns are currently the hottest emerging genre, so they are reuniting the team of Ridley Scott (director), Drew Goddard (screenwriter), and Aditya Sood, Simon Kinberg, and Michael Schaefer (producers) to bring a story this overwhelming to film.

During his interview with Ain’t It Cool News Zahler revealed the impact Wraiths of the Broken Land has already had on film

“…I had a meeting with him and my agent and they said, ‘Could you do a low budget western?’ I said, ‘Something to pay for out of pocket? I don't think so.' Dallas said, ‘Could you do Wraiths of the Broken Land,’ which is my second western novel and it's incredibly nasty. Like Bone Tomahawk times 10. They asked if I could do that as a movie. I said no, because the story's too long. It would be four movies or a television show. But I said I could write another story that is a rescue/men-on-a-mission sort of thing and that's where Bone Tomahawk came from.”

Bone Tomahawk went on to have six award wins and twenty nominations from film festivals and associations. Combined with the film’s popularity as part of Prime Video it became one of the breakout independent films of 2015. Now take all the accolades for interesting characters and dialogue with shocking violence and imagine them, as Zahler said above, TIMES TEN in Wraiths of the Broken Land. In the tradition of many weird westerns you will be taken to unexpected, unforgettable places.

Wraiths of the Broken Land edition by S Craig Zahler Literature Fiction eBooks

This book has been sitting on my shelves for a while. It is one of those books that I knew I was going to likely enjoy, but it fell to the side amongst all the other great titles I have in my library. Then I saw Bone Tomahawk, which was an awesome movie, and decided if Zahler writes like he makes movies then I should make the move Wraiths soon. I was not disappointed.

I love weird/violent/horror westerns and this book fits nicely into that subgenre. The characters are interesting and original. The violence is splattery and it is timed well so it doesn’t take away from the story. Think Tarintino and Joe Lansdale. The tension and action are paced well throughout the entire book. The chapters are short so it is an easy book to follow. Honestly, it is easy to tell that Zahler is a film writer because the story flows like a movie in your head, which to me is the difference between a good storyteller and a good writer. You can be both but some are better at one or the other.

Anyways if you have read The Thicket by Joe Lansdale, Blood Meridian by Mccarthy, or the lesser know Haints Stay by Colin Winette then you should really like this book. If you are into the horror western sub-genre like me, then you will like Zahler’s work for sure.

Wraiths of the Broken Land edition by S Craig Zahler Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

to start i dont do many reviews. so please keep that in mind.

i found this novel while searching among wierd westerns. while this book has no supernatural element it is indeed a horror novel. the horror of what people can do to one another whether it be personal or just buisness. that being said this is not a splatter novel by some hack who just likes flinging gore in your face. the violence is real and mean but its human and thats why its disturbing. some characters are just plain psychotic and do violence to get what they want and that could be described as inhuman i suppose but then there are characters in here that if they dont fight fire with fire the they will not make it. the west was a violent time but it was also a time when families were probably closer than they are today. this author has captured that realism here. i will not sum up the plot here but i hope that others will trust my opinion when i say that charaters are what is important in a story. long clay's cold brutality, patch up's caring soul, deep lake's strong bond with the family but yet acts as an outsider still. the plugford patriarchs longing for his daughters happiness and well being. this is a great book to read and like real life things don't always end pretty but they don't always end badly either.i was looking for a quick good western read not expecting much but found quite possibly the best novel of this year. mr. zahler is an author very much worth watching no matter what genre he may choose to write in next.

i also recommend his other novel A Congregation of Jackals
I saw Zahler's directorial debut, "Bone Tomahawk", not too long ago and loved it. When I discovered he was also an author, I had to get one of his books and give it a try. I was not disappointed.

Reading "Wraiths", it's easy to see where "Bone Tomahawk" came from. Zahler has a great grasp on this sort of material harsh, western, graphic, violent, raw. At times, downright gruesome, but never gratuitous.

His writing style is very easy to read. In places, it reminds me of Herbert. It's clean prose. Zahler overuses some comfortable phrases, but for the most part he does a brilliant job of writing in a style and manner consistent with time period and theme of the story. He paints vivid pictures. It's not just his characters speaking in a tongue consistent with the time period, it's also his writing, and it augments the tale quite well.

The characters are good; fleshed-out and behaving each according to his (or her) own motivations, strengths and limitations. The story follows logically and Zahler does a really nice job setting things up.

Overall I was really happy with the book. I had a difficult time putting it down. Like all good reads, I just wanted one more chapter... and before I knew it, it was over.
A character driven, blood soaked masterpiece. That's the best way to describe S. Craig Zahler's Wraith's of the Broken Land. With an opening chapter that's as interesting as it is horrifying, Zahler masterfully sets the stage for a violent and darkly funny thrill ride of vengeance where no one will escape unscathed, even the reader. The story revolves around a father and his two sons searching desperately for their daughters/sisters who where kidnapped and forced into prostitution in Mexico. The father enlists in the help of a "dandy" to infiltrate the brothel, a Native American warrior, and a cold, calculating killer also known as a "Wraith", to get his daughters back. The characters are written so well that they feel real, flaws and all. Sometimes they commit horrific acts that made me question their morality, then in the next chapter they do something endearing and my attitude toward them would change. Especially when it came to the "Wraith". One chapter I wanted to see him dead, then I found myself rooting for him the next. After that I'd hate him again. It a circle that repeated itself throughout the book.

One night I decided to sit down and read a chapter or two before bed. Before I knew it I had read 12 chapters and ended up with 3 hours of sleep that night. This novel will grab you from the beginning and it won't let go. I finished reading it a week ago and I still can't stop thinking about it. With this novel S. Craig Zahler has become one of my favorite modern writers. Read it if you're a fan of graphically violent, westerns with unpredicable twists and turns. I guarantee you've never read anything like this before.
