About Fifty-One Tales by Lord Dunsany

Fifty-One Tales is a collection of fantasy stories by Lord Dunsany. The collection's significance in the history of fantasy literature was recognized by the Newcastle Publishing Company as the third volume of the celebrated Newcastle Forgotten Fantasy Library in September, 1974. The book collects fifty-one stories by the author. Lord Dunsany was an Anglo-Irish writer and dramatist, notable for his work, mostly in fantasy, published under the name Lord Dunsany. More than eighty books of his work were published, and his oeuvre includes many hundreds of published stories, as well as successful plays, novels and essays. Born to one of the oldest titles in the Irish peerage, Dunsany lived much of his life at perhaps Ireland's longest-inhabited home, Dunsany Castle near Tara, worked with W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory, received an honourary doctorate from Trinity College, was chess and pistol-shooting champion of Ireland, and travelled and hunted extensively.

The book description leads one to expect "short stories" but I blame the description and not the work itself on that count. As compact vignettes, with tight symbolic threads, the tales are fascinating, evocative of fables and mythology. I found myself completely drawn in by dark themes of mortality, as well as Dunsany's observations of dichotomy between human industrialization and Nature. Each provides much food for thought, and I often shared my fascination with friends. Read carefully and digest.

FiftyOne Tales By Lord Dunsany Illustrated Lord Dunsany 9781521093689 Books Reviews

It was a pretty good group of short stories. A couple didn't make sense, but it was good any way.
Odd little snippets of whimsy, enjoyable to readers with experience of Dunsany.
Some amusing, some haunting, did frightening. Lord Dunsany was a master of the short tale. A bit of mythology knowledge will be needed to appreciate some of the stories.w
These are not so much tales as they are encapsulated fiction. Think "Flash Fiction" if you are familiar with that only this predates that
by at least an entire generation of readers, if not more. While Dunsany is an oft overlooked author and not nearly enough people are familiar with his masterpiece; "The King of Elfland's Daughter", the works contained here are not his best. This is also not a book for children as the vocabulary will be beyond the grasp of most and the oft wry humor as well. Even the humor often falls short of the mark although the reader can almost always tell it is aimed. An example would be the retelling of the fable about the tortoise and the hare in which the outcome is changed to include a fatal forest fire. I would venture to say this is not the best place to begin with this author but can be appreciated after reading other, finer works.
A beautiful collection of small texts that show the authors love of nature, and her disconfort with man's effect on it. If you are a poet at heart, you will like it.
The intent of these fantasies is to deplore industrialism and give its readers a few morals. The language is poetic and I like some of the twists the author gives at the end. A nice way to spend an afternoon.
These bite-sized bits of fantasia explore the relationships between our psyches, our historical mythologies, and our place in nature. Jungian archtypes sometimes seem mixed with a bit of opium-induced dreaming. Dunsany's abilities to compactly fit all this into short, impressionistic sketches should be the envy of academics exploring our inner selves and ultimate destinies in dry, footnoted essays.
The book description leads one to expect "short stories" but I blame the description and not the work itself on that count. As compact vignettes, with tight symbolic threads, the tales are fascinating, evocative of fables and mythology.
