With her kids gone for Christmas and her final divorce hearing barely a month away, Leslie Taylor has never felt less generosity in her heart as the holiday approaches in this seasonal short story. Her fireplace is cold, her tree is dark and bare, and her heart is frozen. But when a winter storm strands her soon-to-be-ex husband out at her place on Christmas Eve, Leslie finds that second chances aren't just the stuff of fairy tales. And when a pair of strangers find their way to her door in the middle of the night, more Christmas "magic" happens.

I received a copy of this story as part of the larger writer's group. It was a great Christmas story. Timely. One middle-aged woman who struggles to find herself, while still holding on to what could still be. It shows the power of forgiveness and doing onto others. The writing was descriptive with enough to fill one's imagination. This is my first introduction to this authors writing. I look forward to reading more of her work. Great job, Mary. Best of luck to you. ~~Chiara T. (CWA)Product details

The Last Christmas Tree short story edition by Mary T Wagner Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews
"The Last Christmas Tree" by Mary T. Wagner is the enchanting account of a middle-aged woman, Leslie, struggling to find herself and to adjust to the changes that life brings. As her children reach adulthood, Leslie realizes that over the years her individuality has been absorbed by her roles as mother, wife, housekeeper, etc. In the process of re-defining herself, she now faces the prospect of a dissolving marriage, the pending remarriage of her soon-to-be ex-husband, Doug, and the perceived abandonment by her children. She faces spending her first Christmas alone in a state of self-pity and deep depression. Her sole companion for the holiday on their isolated farm is her faithful collie dog, Betsy. Leslie declares that the magnificent tree standing unadorned in the corner will be "The Last Christmas Tree".
However, events soon experience a drastic upturn. Doug stops by to pick up some lumber to build a coffee table for his fiancé. Because of the bitter weather, his vehicle fails to restart, so they are forced to spend the evening in the house together. She makes hot chocolate while he builds a fire. The evening drags on and they gradually begin to open up to each other, something they haven't done in a very long time.
The story, despite getting off to a weak start because of the overuse of routine descriptive adjectives, gathers strength and becomes a compelling tale. Enduring love and twists of fate serve to overcome the fissures in the family bond created by life's changes. The ending brings comfort and joy, both appropriate sentiments for the holiday season!

Great Christmas read.
A wonderful book. The book is very well written and is a wonderful story. This book is hard to put down once you start reading it.
Sweet story revolving around Christmas, love, family, relationships, & fresh starts. Enjoyed it from beginning to end! Made me smile!
If you've read romantic novels before, you'll be able to see where this one is heading pretty early on. But other than a few paragraphs where the author went overboard on adjectives, this story was a nice, relaxing read.
This is a story of a woman about to spend Christmas by her self. Her family having other places to be. A husband who is with another, their divorce right around the corner. But Christmas miracles do happen. This is hers. Love how Mary T. Wagner's story was told. I will look for more of her work.
The author and I contemporaries and Marquette Communications alumni. Her publication of this short story is an inspiration to all authors and alumni. But it is the story itself that is the true gift. I found myself drawn to the characters and the deft weaving of their message, intertwining to produce what I feel is the main point of the story; if you have courage and persevere, you can always find your way back to yourself, regardless of what life throws at you. Well done Mary. Congratulations and thank you for the outstanding example you set with this venture!
